GI Tract: Animal/Microbial Symbiosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
The gastrointestinal tract is indispensable for an animal’s well-being. Food is consumed through the mouth and digested by host enzymes in the stomach and small intestine, and nutrients are extracted and absorbed in the small and large intestines. In this nutrient-rich environment, microorganisms can colonize and grow, and as a result, numerous interactions or symbioses between microorganisms and the animal exist that impact the health and well-being of the host animal. Symbiosis is defined biologically as ‘‘the living together in more or less intimate association or even close union of two dissimilar organisms’’ and this, in a broad sense, includes pathogens. Thus, symbiosis is living together, irrespective of potential harm or benefit, and living together is no more apparent than in the animal gastrointestinal system. This symbiosis can be relatively defined by the degree of benefit to one or both partners within the association, as well as by the closeness of the association.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a critical organ system mediating nutrient uptake and use by the animal. Understanding factors that influence GI development, growth, and function is critical to improving management and therapeutic approaches to maximize health and production efficiency of livestock. These factors are diverse and include animal nutrition and nutrient interactions with the GI ...

The mammalian gastrointestinal (GI) tract harbors a complex micro-ecosystem consisting of countless bacteria. As an essential ‘organ’, the gut microbiota plays an important role in host nutrition and health by promoting supply, digestion and absorption of nutrient, preventing pathogen’s colonization, and shaping and maintaining normal mucosal immunity. Antibiotics used as dietary additive not o...

There is a growing appreciation of the role of gut microbial communities in host biology. However, the nature of variation in microbial communities among different segments of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is not well understood. Here, we describe microbial communities from ten different segments of the GI tract (mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, ileum, proximal cecum, distal cecum, colon,...

Vertebrates coexist with microorganisms in diverse symbiotic associations that range from beneficial to detrimental to the host. Most research has aimed at deciphering the nature of the composite microbial assemblage's genome, or microbiome, from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and skin of mammals (i.e., humans). In mammals, the GI tract's microbiome aids digestion, enhances uptake of nutrients...

Colonization of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is initiated during birth and continually seeded from the individual's environment. Gastrointestinal microorganisms play a central role in developing and modulating host immune responses and have been the subject of investigation over the last decades. Animal studies have demonstrated the impact of GI tract microbiota on local gastrointestinal imm...
